He’s Fallen in the Water….Sutton (H)…..The Preview

It’s back to league action for the Bees as they entertain sixth place Sutton United at The Hive. Amazingly it’s only Darren Curries fourth league game since taking over as Head Coach so far it’s been a case of one win one draw and one defeat as Barnet look to close the 16 point gap to the play offs. Despite that gap with six games in hand on most of their rivals promotion is definitely not out of the question.

Currie is likely to be without defender Elliott Johnson who was injured at Brentford on Tuesday night while he’ll also have to decide whether to give fit again Andre Boucard a first start. Up until now the Barnet boss has been reluctant to rotate his squad but with two games a week for the foreseeable future he may have to change his approach.

Sutton have been inconsistent of late having lost three of their last five games but have their eyes set on another appearance in the play offs. Paul Doswell’s side have won six times on the road including a 1-0 win at league leaders Leyton Orient. There is likely to be a reunion for Bees old boys Nicky Bailey and Charlie Clough who have both played a major part in The U’s success story.

We’ll have live commentary from Pete Hill and Garry Lakin at the Hive on HRB Saturday Sport.

Saturday Roundup

The Bees face further fixture problems after Bobby Pryce’s last minute penalty gave the underdogs a deserved draw at Colston Avenue. Two nil up at half time the stage was set for Darren Currie’s side to book their place in the quarter finals for the first time in 37 years. The Robins though thought otherwise staging an impressive comeback that had their fans in raptures. As expected against the lowest ranked team left in the competition Barnet enjoyed plenty of possession in the opening period but failed to threaten until the 41st minute when Ephron Mason-Clark was pulled down in the area. Shaq Coulthirst Cooley converted the resultant penalty to put the visitors in front. One became two three minutes later when Mason-Clark headed in from close range after Elito and Taylor had carved the Robins defence apart.

Darren Currie sent on Andre Boucard for Elito at half time but it was the introduction of lively winger Ricky Korboa by the home side that had the greatest impact. Carshalton put the Bees under pressure from the off Huffer saving well from Sogbanmu’s drive and Ashley Charles cleared off the line as the home side piled forward. Dan Sweeney was replaced by Dan Sparkes and the Robins took immediate advantage Sogbanmu powerfully heading them back into the game as the Bees defence went missing at a corner. Coulthirst restored the visitors two goal advantage with a stunning strike two minutes later but Carshalton refused to be beaten. Another set piece gave the home fans hope this time Pappoe’s header deflected off the unfortunate Byron Harrison and beyond Huffers reach. Pryce crunches shot off the top of the Barnet bar before Robson was adjudged to have pulled down Korboa in the box giving the Robins skipper the chance to slam the penalty into the roof of the net to give the home side the result their efforts deserved.

The Snow Must Go On

This weekend’s programmes and match schedule is heavily dependent on the weather relenting and satisfactory travel conditions being prevalent for the team to access HRB studios and attend matches that survive.  At this point, only Boreham Wood and Hadley’s games have been called off.
Despite the whiteout Bees fans are still glowing after the pulsating FA Cup Fourth Round tie that produced a six goal thriller and a replay with Brentford, scheduled for Tuesday. A sellout Hive witnesssed a game that swung this way and that, Brentford taking the lead early, 2 Shaq Coulthirst strikes to give the underdogs the lead, a disputed penalty equaliser for the visitors, and a brilliant Dan Sparkes free kick that brought the hosts level and took the game to a replay. Should they win in West London a much longer trip west awaits, to Swansea on Sunday 17th February.
Barnet hope to keep the Cup success story going with a place in the quarterfinals of the FA Trophy at stake. Carshalton Athletic v Barnet commentary will headline Saturday Sport if the match goes ahead. Midfielder Anthony Charles has joined the squad on loan from Watford for the remainder of the season.
London Broncos kick off the new rugby league season and their Super League campaign on Sunday as Saracens take a break for Six Nations weekend.

Cat Crept In…. Carshalton (a)… The Preview

The cup games keep coming thick and fast for the Bees, the latest being a trip to Bostik League Carshalton Athletic. The Robins are the lowest ranked team left in the competition having started out in the first qualifying round. The comforts of home have proved key to the Surrey sides progress having been drawn at home in every round so far. The cup run has been in contrast to Carshalton’s league form which sees them down in 15th place in the table.

Bees boss Darren Currie has the task of bringing his side back down to earth after Monday’s Cup heroics. With the Brentford replay to come on Tuesday night he may also take the opportunity to rest some players ahead of the trip to Griffin Park. One player who won’t be playing any part is Charlee Adams who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a back injury. The Bees were quick to sign teenager Watford midfielder Anthony Charles on loan for the rest of the campaign and he could make his debut at the War Memorial Ground.

Carshalton have a good record in front of their own fans having lost only one of their last eight home games. They are looking to reach the 4th round of the Trophy for the first time. The teams have met once before in the competition when the Robins won 4-2 at Underhill in 1982.

We’ll have live commentary of the match from Pete Hill & Garry Lakin in HRB Saturday Sport.
