Barnet seek return to form as Solihull Moors visit tops HRB Sport action

To paraphrase the famous Meatloaf song, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad; and with regrets that Wingate & Finchley couldn’t find a way past Maldon & Tiptree, it was a fairly successful afternoon in the FA Cup a week back. Hadley, Hendon and Potters Bar all made it through, however the draw was less kind throwing up 3 challenging away trips after a series of home ties.

Potters Bar have an eye catching Herts derby at in form Ware, currently lying 6th in the Isthmian South Central Division. Hadley travel to former Cup giant killers Havant & Waterlooville who have had an impressive start to the season in National League South and Hendon visit fellow league opposition Hayes and Yeading United.

Matches will be played next Saturday, 5th October.

After a couple of encouraging home victories, Barnet suffered back to back defeats on the road losing 3-0 at bottom club Ebbsfleet on Tuesday. Despite the disappointing performance, the Bees still lie level on points with 7th placed Barrow having a game in hand (which they play on Tuesday at Fylde.)

Boreham Wood also went down, 2-1 at home to Notts County, with Tyrone Marsh scoring an 85th minute consolation.

Hadley were beaten 2-0 by Welwyn Garden City in the Herts Charity Shield.

As Hendon prepare to welcome league leaders Poole, the club has announced a couple of arrivals. Former QPR junior Kraig Noel-Macleod has represented Grenada at Under 20 level and was on loan at Basingstoke last season. Sergio Manesio has returned following a spell at Braintree.

Wingate & Finchley have announced managerial and player changes this week. Boss Steve Clark and assistant Danny Foster have left under mutual consent, to be replaced by Spencer Knight. The former St.Albans, Chelmsford, Canvey Island and Billericay midfielder has been assistant manager at Harlow for the past 5 years. The Blues have also strengthened their squad with Charlie Ruff rejoining after starting the season with Kings Langley. Ruff is a local hero after scoring the goal that ensured the team’s survival last season. Defender Sean Grace has also returned following a spell captaining Potters Bar.

FA Cup and League Bonanza on HRB Sport

It’s back to the romance and drama of the FA Cup this weekend alongside a couple of key league games. All 4 of our local teams made it through to the Second Qualifying Round a fortnight ago and 3 were given home ties. Meanwhile, Barnet’s back to back home wins against Maidenhead and Aldershot catapulted them into the top 5 setting up an intriguing match against 3rd placed Halifax, with another visit to Ebbsfleet to come on Tuesday

HRB Sport will have full coverage of these matches with Martin Rosen gamely taking over the hotseat this afternoon and extended commentary on Tuesday night.

Last Tuesday, Barnet took the lead 2 minutes into the second half against Aldershot when Ephron Mason-Clark beat a defender to rifle a shot into the top corner. A candidate for goal of the season doubled the advantage, the returning Wes Fonguck curling in a 25 yarder to take the Bees level on points with 4th placed Yeovil.

On the same evening Wingate & Finchley travelled to Horsham needing league points. However, the Blues found themselves 2 down at half time. Alphanso Kennedy gave the team hope by scoring in the 69th minute but the game ended 2-1 leaving the team in 19th place, one point above the bottom three.

On Wednesday Hadley went out of the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy losing to Cockfosters on penalties.

FA Cup encounters spearhead HRB Sport as Bees hold open training session

The FA Cup takes centre stage this weekend with 4 of our local clubs participating in the First Qualifying Round of the world’s greatest Club Cup competition.

Hendon and Potters Bar join previous round winners Wingate & Finchley and Hadley to fly the flag and add some much needed prize money to club coffers.

The Greens have one of the round’s most attractive sounding visits to Little Common, who are based in Bexhill but play at Eastbourne United’s ground. The club has won twice in the Cup to reach this stage and play in the Premier Division of the Southern Combination League. Manager James Gray has strengthened his squad with the addition of midfielder/striker Tom Nyama from Met Police.

Potters Bar also begin their campaign on the road at Takeley who lie top of the Essex Senior League. They were taken all the way in the previous round, beating White Ensign 3-2 after extra time in their midweek replay.

Wingate & Finchley and Hadley have already tasted FA Cup success this season, and both clubs were rewarded with home ties against Spartan South Midlands Premier opposition. The Blues welcome London Colney and the Bricks entertain Arlesey Town

HRB will have full coverage of all 4 ties throughout a bumper edition of Saturday Sport.

The international break means that Barnet are without a game on account of having 3 players called up. After Jack Taylor was selected by Republic of Ireland Under 21s, Rihards Matrevics and Antonis Vasiliou were chosen by Latvia Under 21s and Cyprus Under 19s respectively.

That meant games against Aldershot on Tuesday and AFC Fylde on Saturday being postponed. The home match against the Shots has been rescheduled for 17th September and the visit to Fylde will occur on 1st October, both Tuesday evening matches.

Good news for the Bees this week saw midfielder Wes Fonguck return to the club after missing the start of the season considering offers from clubs in Scandinavia. He scored 9 goals last season and will be available for the team’s next match against Maidenhead on 14th September.

In the absence of a league match this weekend, the Club are holding an open training session at The Hive. Fans will be able to watch the squad practice on the main stadium pitch between 1.30 and 3.30 followed by the opportunity to take on the players in a table football tournament in the Legends Bar. More information on the club website.

With London Broncos travelling to Hull KR on Friday in a crucial opportunity to close the gap on their relegation rivals, head coach Danny Ward has stated he wishes to stay at the club whichever league they play in next season. With 9 victories this season including two defeats of leaders St Helens the club has earned respect for their performances and results. Saturday Sport will review the permutations and combinations with one game to play.
