Cat Crept In…. Carshalton (a)… The Preview

The cup games keep coming thick and fast for the Bees, the latest being a trip to Bostik League Carshalton Athletic. The Robins are the lowest ranked team left in the competition having started out in the first qualifying round. The comforts of home have proved key to the Surrey sides progress having been drawn at home in every round so far. The cup run has been in contrast to Carshalton’s league form which sees them down in 15th place in the table.

Bees boss Darren Currie has the task of bringing his side back down to earth after Monday’s Cup heroics. With the Brentford replay to come on Tuesday night he may also take the opportunity to rest some players ahead of the trip to Griffin Park. One player who won’t be playing any part is Charlee Adams who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a back injury. The Bees were quick to sign teenager Watford midfielder Anthony Charles on loan for the rest of the campaign and he could make his debut at the War Memorial Ground.

Carshalton have a good record in front of their own fans having lost only one of their last eight home games. They are looking to reach the 4th round of the Trophy for the first time. The teams have met once before in the competition when the Robins won 4-2 at Underhill in 1982.

We’ll have live commentary of the match from Pete Hill & Garry Lakin in HRB Saturday Sport.

BARNET 3 Brentford 3

Barnet produced another excellent performance to earn a replay against Championship Brentford twice coming from behind on a pulsating night at the Hive. In front of a record crowd Darren Currie’s Bees will feel they were unlucky not to have booked a fifth round trip to Swansea after replays clearly showed Brentford’s Ollie Watkin’s dived to earn his side a second half penalty. The West London side came closest to scoring in a phrenetic first half when Moses Odubajo’s shot came back off the post. Barnet’s best opportunity was Dan Sweeney’s header which was turned over the bar by Luke Daniels.

Two goals in three second half minutes from Shaq Coulthirst turned the game on its head the first finished from Ephron Mason-Clark’s pinpoint cross, the second driven home after Wes Fonguck persistence set up the opportunity. Brentford drew level on the hour when David Tutonda’s challenge on Watkins was adjudged to be a penalty by the referee. Top scorer Neal Maupay sending debutant keeper Will Huffer the wrong way from the spot kick. When Sergi Canos completed an excellent move with 19 minutes remaining to put the visitors 3-2 up it looked as if the Championship side had finally taken control. Barnet though had other ideas substitute Dan Sparkes sending a sublime free kick into the top left hand corner to put the home side level. In a frantic finish Huffer saved superbly from Benrahma and Odubajo hit the post again. A defeat though would have been rough justice on Darren Currie’s side who more than matched opponents 71 places above them in footballs hierarchy.

Bees: Huffer, Alexander, Tutonda, Johnson, Sweeney, Robson, Fonguck (Sparkes), Elito (Boucard), J.Taylor, Mason-Clark, Coulthirst.

HRBSport Man of the Match: The Team

Attack of the Killer Bees… Brentford (h)…The Preview

Could get confusing at The Hive tonight with both sets of fans chanting “Come on You Bees!” That’s though is where the similarity between the two teams stops with Brentford 18th in the Championship Barnet will be looking to close a 71 place gap in footballs hierarchy. The North London Bees are looking to reach the 5th round of the FA Cup for the first time and Darren Currie’s team will know their prospective opponents with the draw being made before kick off.

The newly installed boss has been robbed of the ability to name an unchanged line up for the sixth straight game thanks to suspensions to Charlee Adams and Mark Cousins. While Cousins absence after being red carded at Braintree is a straight forward one controversy surrounds midfielder Adams who has fallen foul of the new FA rule which makes cards competition specific. Two yellow cards in Barnet’s five FA Cup ties to this point produced a ban while tonight’s opponents having only played one game are at full strength. The inequality is likely to lead to a rule change next season but tonight it leaves Darren Currie with a tough decision. 20 year old Will Huffer has been signed on loan from Leeds to cover Cousins place in goal but filling the hole left in midfield by Adams absence is more problematic. Options include recalling Wes Fonguck, switching Dan Sweeney from the back four or risking Andre Boucard who’s been out since September.

Brentford are in good form, unbeaten in seven they have won their last three including a first away league win at Rotherham last time out. Manager Thomas Frank named a strong line-up against Oxford in the last round and is expected to follow suit tonight. It will be interesting to see if he plays 17 goal top scorer Neal Maupay or leaves the talented Frenchman on the bench.

The two teams have met once before in the competition but while tonight’s action will be screened live on BT Sport in 1925 John Logie Baird will still getting to grips with his invention as Brentford beat Barnet 3-1 in the FA Cup 1st Round. Recent history has seen Barnet beat Brentford only twice in 15 attempts. Both wins came in the Football League Trophy on penalties in 2011 and memorably 6-3 at Griffin Park in 1991.

We’ll have coverage of all the action on an HRB Sport FA Cup Special with Pete Hill and Garry Lakin live at the Hive.

POTTERS BAR TOWN 0 Dorking Wanderers 0

Another disappointing afternoon at The Pakex as the Scholars were beaten by two second half goals. Chances were few and far between in an even opening period Sean Bonnet-Johnson’s shot fielded by Wanderers keeper Slavomir Huk was the closest Potters Bar came to breaking the deadlock. The visitors took the lead after 54mins when Lewis Taylor’s 25 yard free kick went in off a post. With the Scholars pushing forward for an equaliser number two arrived nine minutes later Reece Hall’s quick break finding James McShane at the far post who calmly finished his fourth goal of the season. Potters Bar’s best chance came in injury time when substitute Josh Hutchinson failed to find the target from five yards out.

Barnet confirmed this week what most fans were hoping and expecting after an encouraging run of results, the permanent appointment of Darren Currie as Head Coach. On the day that the club announced former boss John Still was leaving by mutual consent, Currie was given full charge of first team affairs on a rolling contract. His first task will be to emulate the giant killing act at Sheffield United that brought him such kudos, when the team faces Brentford in the FA Cup Fourth Round on Monday night.
Currie responded to his appointment with a positive statement: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my first three weeks in charge and I’m relishing the chance to take this great club forward. It’s an exciting new chapter for me and I hope to keep the smiles on the faces of our brilliant supporters.”
In an ongoing local theme of goalkeeper loans, Barnet have secured the services of Leeds stopper Will Huffer. The 20 year old who made his debut for the Championship leaders this season has represented England at Under 17 and Under 18 level. He arrives on a month long loan deal.
Current Herts Senior Cup holders Boreham Wood have drawn National League South Hemel Hempstead in the quarter finals of this season’s competition. The home tie will be played on Tuesday February 5th.
Potters Bar’s first round Herts Charity Cup tie against Hemel Hempstead, postponed this week due to snow has been rearranged for Tuesday January 29th.
Wingate & Finchley are encouraging more students into science, technology, engineering and maths careers through the appointment of an Al football coach. The partnership with Big Band Fair will see the facility introduced at the home match against Whitehawk.
Hendon have released first team squad members Shaun Lucien and Adam Pepara while Tyriq Hunte has joined Hanwell Town on dual registration.
Hadley remain 3 points clear of the chasing pack after Biggleswade FC’s match at Leverstock Green was a victim of the weather. The other Biggleswade club, United saw their title ambitions dented by a 3-3 draw with Colney Heath.

Oh I Know….. Potters Bar Town v Dorking Wanderers The Preview..

Our live Saturday action this week comes from The Pakex Stadium where Potters Bar look for their first win of 2019. It’s been a tough time of late for the Scholars who have lost five of their last six falling to 16th place in the Bostik Premier table. Visitors Dorking Wanderers were only formed in 1999 and have gone from Park football to second in the table just two points behind leaders Haringey Borough. Wanderers have gone six games without defeat and beat Enfield Town 1-0 last time out. Top scorer Jason Prior notched a hat trick when the teams met earlier in the season as Dorking ran out 4-1 winners. Scholars will be hoping to build on last weeks point at Bognor when goals from returning striker Ben Ward-Cochrane and Sean Grace completed an impressive second half comeback.

We’ll have live reports and commentary on the match in HRB Saturday Sport.

Currie The Man For Bees

Barnet have appointed Darren Currie as their new Head Coach. The 44 year old took over on a temporary basis when former boss John Still retired from management in December, since then the Bees have won three and drawn one of Currie’s five matches in charge. Speaking to the clubs website Currie said; “This is an incredibly proud moment for myself and a great opportunity to take my first steps in management at a club I loved playing for.I have thoroughly enjoyed my first three weeks in charge and I’m relishing the chance to take this great club forward. It’s an exciting new chapter for me and I hope to keep the smiles on the faces of our brilliant supporters.”

The news comes after the club confirmed that Director of Football John Still had left the club by mutual consent.
