Barnet v Maidstone…..The Preview

We’re back at The Hive today as the 🐝’s look to bounce back from tuesday’s defeat by Salford City which saw them blow an early lead to concede three 🙈. Afterwards John Still wasn’t chuffed accusing certain players of playing for themselves 😡. The visitors today are more concerned with the other end of the table Maidstone are 21st in the table and haven’t won for five games. The Stones though have proved far more effective away from their Gallagher Stadium having won three of their four games this season away from home. Goals have been the problem for the Kent side only scoring more than one in a game twice all season.

With Callum Reynolds and Dave Tarpey fit again and Zak Jukes and Shaq Coulthirst close to a return John Still faces an interesting selection problem as he looks to keep the 🐝’s within striking distance of the play offs.

The two teams last met in a league game 26 years ago Barnet winning 3-2 at Underhill in February 1992.

Maidstone fact: Maidstone is the only town with a dinosaur on its crest 🦖. Iggy the Iguanadon was discovered in a quarry in the town in 1834 and a cast of the famous herbivore can be found in the towns museum.

Scholars Name New Management Duo

Potters Bar Town have appointed club skipper Lee O’Leary and Scott Cousins as their new management duo. O’Leary captained the side to promotion last season while Cousins has played at both Hendon and St Albans. Steve Ringrose will continue as General Manager linking the team to the board.The Scholars have won two of their three games since former Manager James Duncan and coach Michael Murray moved to Chesham United. The new management teams first engagement will be Saturdays local derby against Wingate and Finchley.

Boreham Wood made it through at the second attempt. Despite being held at home by league rivals Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday Jamal Fyfield’s strike in the 45th minute of the Essex replay took them through where they will fancy their chances away at Southport, bottom of National League North.
Managerless Potters Bar staged a remarkable turnaround in their league encounter with Bishops Stortford to take all 3 points. 2-0 down early on, the Scholars scored 3 goals either side of the interval. Steve Brown reduced the deficit prior to the break, Keegan Cole converted a penalty shortly after and Bradley Sach scored the first of his brace on 57. Sach was on hand in the 84th minute to seal a 4-2 win. The team lie 7th just 2 points behind a trio of Sussex teams.
Wingate & Finchley put 6 of the best past Cockfosters in the London Senior Cup. Brandon Mckenna and Marc Charles-Smith notched two each, with Luke Ifil and Reece Beckles-Richards completing the rout late on.

Hadley secured an impressive win at second placed Tring, Alfie Bartram the goalscorer lifting the team into 4th place.

FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round

Late goals from Elliot Johnson and Cheye Alexander made sure the Bees will be in Monday’s first round draw after Braintree fought back from two goals down. Barnet started brightly and were two goals up inside 15 minutes. David Tutonda scored the first following up a cross from Josh Walker, Manny Duku setting up Jack Taylor for a calm finish from 6 yards for number two nine minutes later. At that stage The Bees looked in complete command but poor defending in first half injury time led to Reece Grant halving the deficit after Barnet failed to clear a corner. Braintree were level when Lyle Della-Verde volleyed home after 65 minutes. The Bees though weren’t to be denied man of the match Cheye Alexander finding second half substitute Elliott Johnson who headed home his first goal since May 2016 before thumping home a free kick 6 minutes from time to secure a memorable victory.

HRB Sport is back on air this weekend to bring you full coverage of our local fixtures and the wider sporting action. Among the highlights, Barnet and Borehamwood set out on the road to Wembley.

A busy week at the Pakex with manager James Duncan leaving the club to take over at Chesham where he will be joined by player coach Michael Murray. On the pitch the team lost 1-0 to Watford in the Herts Cup. The Scholars have received a tough draw away at Margate in the FA Trophy next weekend.

Wingate & Finchley had a good week winning 1-0 at Bognor Regis Town to improve their league position. Meanwhile Hendon were beaten by the Met Police in the Southern League Cup.

Mixed results for our Spartan teams Hadley defeated Ware 1-0 while Edgware lost 5-2 to Hayes and Yeading.
